Chapter Twenty

That afternoon, after recruiting more addicts, I express-mailed a status report to Lewison’s P.O. box, along with a cassette and a roll of film.

I wrote that I’d met thirteen people plotting acts of civil disobedience. I had six on tape complaining how corrupt the government was. And there was Aaron, who schemed to create a drug empire. I had surpassed the Insect’s commandments, and Rachel should be released in time to join her family for Christmas.

Would Lewison buy it? They weren’t legitimate revolutionaries, but quite likely he had quotas to fill too, and I was giving him almost three times what he’d asked for.

Lewison liked to spout official crap like fulfilling the Will of History and smiting enemies who lurked everywhere. But he was probably an expert liar, and who knew what he really thought? His hair was graying, but he hadn’t advanced beyond Special Agent. Maybe he was angling for a higher position, but hadn’t filled his quotas. Or maybe being a creepy-eyed asshole held him back.

I wasn’t sure how the Insect hive worked, but city and county cops cared more about padding their wallets than anything else. If I gave Lewison a lot of arrests, he’d look good and maybe move up the hierarchy. Maybe that’s what he really wanted.

I’d have to hope I was right. I couldn’t find the people who’d burned down the lumber office or put up the road signs, not without traipsing around the Shawnee Hills where I didn’t know anyone. As for the flyer, that had to be Sarah, maybe with Paul’s help on the wording. I’d have to claim failure there too.

Next, I sat in my room and composed a flyer. I didn’t have Rachel’s penmanship and it took several tries before everything was centered and it looked presentable.
